The library is relatively quiet after the mayhem I left behind at Cross House. The electrician and his mates turned up just after we’d finished clearing the breakfast pots away, their equipment littering the hallway and their loud voices sweeping through the house in booming echoes. I said goodbye to Hugh with the promise I’d be back before the gang of workmen left. According to the man who appeared to be in charge, they wouldn’t be leaving until after five o’clock as they wanted to make the most of the lighter nights and get as much done as they could.

I dropped the kids off at school and only then did I feel myself begin to relax after last night’s drama. I waved them off and got straight back in the car, determined to make the most of every single minute available to me.

Knowing the library wouldn’t be open at that early hour, I went for a coffee and sat for forty-five minutes, enjoying the solace.

Today I am going to use every bit of strength I have to find out something about Cross House; anything that might help me understand its story. I ignore the thoughts that nibble away at me, telling me it’s all in my mind and that I’m slowly but surely becoming unhinged. I am somehow convinced I’ll find something today, some piece of evidence that will help me come to terms with what is happening.

I sit at a computer and place my notebook beside me. I only have a two-hour slot so will have to make the most of that time. If it’s not enough I will move on somewhere that has a good signal and use my phone. I’ll do whatever it takes to get to the bottom of it all.

I begin by searching the name Adrian Wentworth. It seems as good a place as any to start and since he died first, I figure it may just help me put things in order.

There are dozens of Facebook profiles and a smattering of ancestry sites with that name but nothing with any local interest. I narrow it down and type in ‘Adrian Wentworth Brackston’. Nothing, but then the information I’m looking for happened long before the Internet came into being. I refuse to give in to the disappointment that niggles at me and change my wording. Determined to find something, I type in ‘Cross House Brackston’ and wait while the results load up.

There are plenty to see as the page finally springs to life. I read through the array of pub names and guest house websites that are on the first page until one at the bottom catches my eye. It’s a private site set up by somebody to outline the contents of old wills. Intrigued, I click on it and scroll down until I see those magical words – Wentworth, Cross House, Brackston. Air expands in my chest and I feel euphoria take hold, lightening my mood. I swallow and tell myself to get a grip.
